I investigate the evolution and adaptability of conscious processes and underlying neural structures in human and non-human organisms.
My early research tapped into conscious and subconscious processes involved in language, vision, and numerical cognition. Recently, I developed the ‘distance index’ (DI) and the ‘global index’ (GI) to capture differences in brain structure between males and females, between individuals in clinical groups, and between teleost fish reared in minimal versus enriched environments
I also joined efforts with Anders F. Opdal, Sergey Budaev, and Jarl Giske who build evolutionary simulation models of animal behavior, ecology, and wellbeing.
