Group Leaders

Dag L. Aksnes
Group Leader UiB, Professor, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
Enjoys mechanistic modeling in biological oceanography

Christian Jørgensen
Group Leader Uni, Researcher, Uni Research
I work with adaptation as a tool to build models that scale mechanisms at the individual level to population-level patterns and evolutionary outcomes. Topics of interest include mating systems, fishing-induced evolution, life history theory, and algorithms for modelling evolution.

Geir Huse
Group Leader IMR, Researcher, Institute of Marine Research
My research interests are individual-based modelling, ecosystem and population dynamics, behaviour, recruitment, life history theory, fish migration, fisheries management, and plankton dynamics.

Academic Staff

Marco Castellani
Researcher, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
I am currently involved in the development of individual-based models of marine environments. My research interests include the emergence of traits and behaviours in evolving populations, predator-prey interactions, and swarm intelligence.

Nicolas Dupont
Postdoc, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
I am interested in combining observations and modelling of zooplankton populations, especially in connection with their response to physical variables.

Sigrunn Eliassen
Researcher, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
My current research focus is on the evolution of mating systems. I use theoretical models to study adaptive behavioural decisions in different ecological settings.

Øyvind Fiksen
Professor, University of Bergen, Department of Biology & Uni Research
I am particularly interested in behaviour and life-history of marine organisms, and how traits emerge in populations and ecosystems through natural selection.

Jarl Giske
Professor, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
My main research interest is to model how animals make decisions. Currently I work most on studying how genetic algorithms can be used to evolve neural networks or emotions in the organisms, and then use these brains or feelings to simulate decision-making.

Trond Kristiansen
Researcher, Institute of Marine Research
I use individual-based models for larval and juvenile stages of fish together with ocean circulation models to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that drive variability in fisheries recruitment.

Marc Mangel
Adjunct Professor, University of Bergen, Department of Biology &
University of California Santa Cruz
Marc is Professor at the University of California Santa Cruz and Adjunct Professor associated with the Theoretical Ecology Group.

Anders F. Opdal
Researcher, Uni Research
My research is mainly focused around life history theory of fish and fish larvae, with particular interest towards linking spawning migration and offspring fitness.

Solfrid Sætre Hjøllo
Researcher, Institute of Marine Research
Working with coupled physical-biological modelling, end-to-end-modelling, and physical oceanography. I'm particularly interested in coupling between trophic layers and interactions with physical quantities.

Rune Rosland
Associate Professor, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
I am currently involved in research projects concerning the growth and energetics of mussels in contrasted environments, and integrated ecosystem models for water circulation, nutrient recycling and pelagic production in marine coastal ecosystems.

Kjell Rong Utne
Postdoc, Institute of Marine Research
Working interests: spatial distribution of pelagic fish and trophic interactions. My work is mainly focused on two different models: a large scale management model for the Norwegian Sea fisheries; and a coupled end-to-end ecosystem model for the Norwegian Sea.

PhD Students

Rebecca E. Holt
PhD Student, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
I am interested in evolutionary biology and life history theory as well as anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems, such as global climate change. My PhD project focusses on adaptations to climate change in Atlantic cod using life history and bioenergetics models.

Nicolas Rodriguez
PhD Student, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
Short description to be displayed on page with all group members.

Selina Våge
PhD Student, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
I am interested in mathematical ecology and evolutionary dynamics. Currently I am focusing on pattern-generating mechanisms in the marine microbial food web.

Long-term visitors

Jan Heuschele
Researcher, German Research Foundation (DFG)
I am currently a research fellow of the German Research Foundation (DFG). I use experimental and modeling studies to explore the influence of the biotic and abiotic environment on sexual selection in marine copepods and its potential feedback on population dynamics. Sexual selection in plankton is a fairly unexplored field, but several studies report courtship dances and other behaviors that resemble sexually selected behaviors of higher organisms.

Perdana Karim Prihartato
PhD Student, Visiting from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology
PhD student, visiting from Red Sea Research Center, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia.

Leo Zijerveld
PhD Student, Visiting from Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland, and Scottish Agricultural College
I'm interested in stochastic models for the spread of disease in heterogeneous wildlife populations, and using time series data and MCMC inference techniques to derive parameter estimates for such models.

Alumni

Agurtzane Urtizberea
Researcher, University of Bergen, Department of Biology
My main research interest is to understand the behaviour and survival of fish larvae in the sea using modelling.
